As the second-generation BMW M2 matures, the German automaker is diligently preparing more specialized iterations of its compact sports coupe. Following the recent introduction of the M2 CS, which boasts increased horsepower and has already established a new compact car record at the Nürburgring, BMW M has now hinted at a street-legal track package for the M2. Spy photographs further confirm testing of this M2 variant equipped with the new package on the circuit. These various M Performance Parts are poised to elevate the M2 into an even more formidable track weapon, warranting a closer examination.
Initial glimpses of the track package reveal a striking yellow M2, partially concealed by camouflage at its front and rear. However, the prominent new rear wing is unmistakably visible, poised to significantly augment the vehicle's downforce. Visually, this iteration appears to sit closer to the ground than the standard M2, with a more pronounced front lip also evident in spy shots. The vehicle is fitted with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires, a performance-oriented choice that should maximize the coupe's on-track capabilities. While a partial interior shot is available, it primarily shows the widescreen display, a feature common to other M2 models. The presence of rear headrests suggests that radical weight reduction measures, such as the removal of rear seats found in more extreme models like the M4 CSL, have not been implemented.
The exact application of this Track Package, whether it is for the standard M2, the M2 CS, or both, remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, significant under-the-skin modifications are expected, beyond the visible aesthetic changes. The standard M2 is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine generating 473 horsepower, while the CS variant pushes this to 523 horsepower. It is improbable that BMW would allow the Track Package to overshadow the CS in terms of output, suggesting a power figure somewhere between these two models. If the Track Package is offered on the standard M2, a manual transmission option might be available, a notable contrast to the CS, where its 523 horsepower was deemed too substantial for a manual gearbox. The full reveal of the M2 with the Track Package is anticipated later this year, alongside pricing details, with its market introduction slated for 2026.
