Following the conclusion of its seven-season run, the acclaimed Netflix animated fantasy epic, The Dragon Prince, is poised for a continuation with a new saga titled The Dragon King. Co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond are spearheading this ambitious project, fueled by a highly successful crowdfunding initiative.
The campaign for The Dragon King has garnered significant support, easily surpassing its initial quarter-million-dollar target and attracting over $570,000 in pledges. This financial backing ensures the development of a storyline that resumes seven years after the events of the original series, focusing on the ascending Dragon Prince Zym.
The new narrative centers on Zym as he strives to establish a delicate balance within the mystical land of Xadia. However, his efforts towards peace are swiftly jeopardized by the reappearance of an exiled figure asserting a claim to the throne, promising a fresh wave of political intrigue and conflict.
Ehasz, known for his work on Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Richmond, along with director Villads Spangsberg, are at the helm of this new production. Beloved characters, including the wizard Prince Callum, the elf assassin Rayla, and the dark mage Claudia, will be reprising their roles with their original voice actors. Additionally, Dante Basco, who voiced a nascent Zym in the original series, will take on a more prominent role for the now-mature dragon, joined by Liam O’Brien of Critical Role as a new character, Luna Devorans.
Supporters of the campaign are eligible for a range of exclusive incentives, from Discord access and unique merchandise like a Zym patch or a Callum glow toad plushie, to prestigious producer credits and even minor speaking roles in the production. The funds collected are primarily intended for creating promotional teasers to attract further investment from Hollywood studios. A stretch goal of $1 million would see O’Brien and other cast members participate in a special one-shot actual play session using Tales of Xadia, the official tabletop role-playing game derived from the series.
