Community Joins Forces to Honor Local Military Heroes

In a heartwarming initiative this month, the city of Columbus has come together to express gratitude toward its military personnel. This May, as part of Military Appreciation Month, WTVM is collaborating with key local organizations on an annual food collection campaign. The Boxes to Troops drive aims to convey appreciation for soldiers stationed at Fort Benning, especially those returning from deployments or training missions and those far from their loved ones. By joining hands with Navy Federal Credit Union and United Service Organization Georgia, the community hopes to create care packages filled with essential items that reflect the region's admiration.

The list of requested donations includes a variety of non-perishable snacks designed to bring comfort and joy to these dedicated individuals. Donors are encouraged to contribute juice boxes, candy bars, snack cakes, trail mix, cookies, and other individually wrapped treats. These small gestures go a long way in reminding soldiers of home and the support awaiting them. It’s important to note that only food items meeting specific criteria—such as being unexpired and single-serving—are accepted. Toiletries and clothing are not part of this particular effort.

This year’s event offers flexible donation options for participants. Contributions can be made until May 31st at the Navy Federal Credit Union branch located at 6501 Veterans Parkway in Columbus. Additionally, there will be a one-day drop-off opportunity at WTVM's headquarters at 1909 Wynnton Road on May 21st, spanning from early morning till late evening. Such initiatives remind us all how collective action fosters unity and strengthens bonds within communities while honoring those who serve our nation selflessly.
